Although it shouldn’t, it still amazes me how politicians can speak out of both sides of their mouth from each of their two faces.
Case in point, during the Bush administration there was a decree that simply stated that the “Enemy Combatants” did not qualify for P.O.W .
The reason for this was some flimsy excuse that since the enemy was not flying a single flag and that they didn’t have uniforms and this and that and this and that and this and that they should be treated as “Enemy Combatants” and therefore didn’t qualify for the rights that are guaranteed to a prisoner of war.
Now, I’m not here to argue whether it was a good or bad decision to put the moniker “Enemy Combatant” on the suspected enemy fighters.
In case you’re wondering, it was an idiotic decision but that’s the status that the Bush administration concluded that best described these people and so be it.
All of a sudden we had prisons in foreign lands that were quickly filling up with these “Enemy Combatants”. Nobody had any idea what to do with them. Oh sure, we water-boarded them and threatened them with Black & Decker power tools in a completely misguided attempt to gain strategic information on Al Qaeda and it’s plans for world domination. Wonder-Twin Powers Activate!
But I digress, so as I already said, our foreign land prisons were slowly filling up, nobody had any idea whether the people in those prisons were or were not Al Qaeda, militants, insurgents or Smurfs. There arose the problem of how to try them in an attempt to sort this mess out.
First, the Federal Court’s weren’t good enough because the Bush Administrations dirty little secrets could be made public and this was no good.
Then they thought that maybe a military tribunal would be a good way of applying some sort of warped justice to this grown list of people. This was also deemed to be unproductive as these non-P.O.W’s were not Prisoners of War.
So, Goldilocks couldn’t make up her mind, one solution was too hot and the other solution was illegal. Not having the middle bowl of porrage, which would have been just right, the Bush administration decided that they weren’t going to do anything at all. The folks in the prisons would sit in those prisons without any type of classification.
Time goes on, a historic election takes place and a very smart Senator from Chicago was elected President.
Oh, and by the way, apparently he’s black; or something.
The new president quickly started undoing all the executive orders that his predecessor had implemented and then the new president stated, We are closing Gitmo!
Yet there still existed the problem of the prisoners of not war and what status they should be categorized under.
The new Presidents people came up with a very unique idea, they didn’t issue any type of status to these non-P.O.W’s but rather the decision was made that the orchestrator of the September 11 attacks against the United States were to be tried in the US. In the Federal court system.
Personally, I think this is a great solution to the problem. The reason I say that is because by having them tried in a Federal courtroom the Obama administration indirectly followed the Bush administrations edicts that these non-P.O.W’s are not, nor were they ever at any time part of any organized army and thus they were citizens who perpetrated a crime within the borders of the United States.
In essence, the rules that apply to an illegal alien from Mexico, who for sake of argument, murdered someone. That these same rules also apply to those who orchestrated and planned the 9-11 attacks in the United States.
You’d think that this was the end of the story but it isn’t !
For, you see, those Politicians who sided with President Bush about not granting these people P.O.W status have now made a complete and total about-face and are now condemning the idea of having these folks tried in a Federal court.
I think they have absolutely no right to complain about this mess because they were the ones who helped create it in the first place.
Just a few moments ago I saw Sen. John McCain, red faced with anger, spouting off about how these people should not be tried in Federal court. Trying them there would create a whole new lot of terrorists that would do something or other.
You know how it is with McCain, you basically get a bunch of gibberish with a few buzzwords tossed in for good measure.
Mr. McCain, with all due respect to you and your accomplishments in Vietnam, where you were tortured by “Cubans” (yeah I don’t get that one either), as well as your successes in getting elected to the Senate, would you please shut the **** up. You are one of the biggest culprits that helped to create this mess, in essence if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem because you are effectively being a speed-bump that we just don’t need right now.
What am I say though, how could I ever accuse the party of “NO” of being a bunch of two faced liars and hypocrites. Well, the reason is because they are a bunch of two faced liars and hypocrites.
The Republicans have more loyalty to their own party then they do to the people they claim that they represent or the Constitution they swore to uphold.
It’s disgusting that their priorities are so immensely screwed up.
Now, the Democrats are not a whole lot better on the whole then the Republicans but at least they try to put their differences aside in attempt after attempt to work with Republicans on legislation where they are only met with a huge resounding “NO”…
With their hands cupped over their ears the Republicans have the same generic answer to everything that is proposed by Democrats. I call it the “la la la la la, I can’t hear you” syndrome in which the only correct answer to everything is “NO”…
This time around I’m liking what I’m seeing, as much as the GOP would love to have military tribunals try these cases so as to make it easier to sweep the past under the rug, the facts are that without stating so, the Obama administration had given these people status and is treating them in accordance with the Bush administration and the GOP.
Gentlemen, you didn’t want to classify anyone as a P.O.W. And now you have to deal with that decision as it comes back and bight you on the rear. You had your chance and you could have cleared thing up before they became a mess of epic proportions but instead you marched lock-step with the Whit-house.
You can not go around changing the rules as time goes by just because the rules your originally created no longer suit you.
