What can only be described as breath of fresh air, the United States House of Representatives voted on the Senate Health Care Bill 219-212 which is indeed a razor thin margin as the Democrats needed 216 votes to get the motion passed.
After the vote an short bout of cheering could be heard from the Democrat side along with a chant of “Yes we can” wafting through the hall.
The tensions, though minimized, had not entirely been broken as the House would still need to vote on a motion to Recommit.
The motion to recommit would see the Senate Bill, that the house voted on, be at least put in limbo and at worst outright neutered as it would then have to be restructured with new language. In effect it could sabotage the legislation by sending it back to committee.
House Republicans immediately started playing the “Right to Life” card to somehow scare conservative Democrats into voting for the motion to recommit. Though Democrats quickly restated that the President would be issuing a Presidential order which protects unborn children and sees newborns covered with health-care protection should they be born in some sort of medical distress. In previous years families could be bankrupted by medical bills for the care of the newborn by hospital staff.
In the end, the Democratic party held together and the Senate Health Care Bill becomes the law of the land as soon as the President signs it which obviously he will.
We have now seen history on this day and it will mean that millions of Americans will now be able to get health-care coverage and many more will not be disqualified due to “preexisting conditions”.
