On Sunday, October 11 Gay rights activists from across the country congregated in Washington, DC in an effort to be heard by their elected officials.
This of course includes congressmen, senators and let’s not forget about the president himself Mr. Obama who promised to repeal the don’t ask don’t tell policy as it relates to homosexuals serving in the armed forces.
Although a step in the right direction, homosexuals around the United States want more than just the disbanding of the don’t ask don’t tell policy. What they want is to be granted the rights that are promised to every American citizen within the bill of rights and the constitution.
Although there is nothing in the bill of rights or the constitution specifically mentioning homosexuals, or homosexual marriages, it does grant them with certain inalienable rights. One of those rights is the pursuit of happiness!
It was quite a scene in Washington on Sunday, thousands of gay people marching and protesting against the discriminatory policies that have been aimed against them for as long as the United States has been in existence.
Naturally there were people standing all around watching the spectacle, women spurring quickly away with their children in tow; trying desperately to shield their children’s eyes lest their children witnessed the protest and possibly catching the gayness. Yes the game this is a terrible disease, scientists are not sure how it is transmitted from person to person but they do say if we don’t find a cure for it soon then his highly probable that the human race will cease to exist!
Naturally I jest, if anyone actually believes that homosexuality is transmitted like the common cold, should have their head examined.
This brings me to a point that I have been thinking about for a long time. I believe that as far as conservative politicians go, they absolutely love the fact that gay people have found their own voice and are using it to fight for their civil rights.
Why do conservatives love having gay activists around?
The answer is simple really, in simple terms and gays and lesbians are a fantastic device to rally the ultra conservative base along the bible belt which in turn helps the politician in question to be reelected.
Homosexuality is also a fantastic divisive tool for the republican party. This tool was especially useful during the Bush administration, the gay and lesbian civil rights activists were actually one of the cards in an elaborate game of three card Monte.
Whenever of the Republican Party needed to Ste your attention away from another misstep by the great leader George W Bush. It was so we easy, Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly would start rabble rousing by creating a false uproar over issues such as gay marriage, gays in the military and let us not forget an oldie but goodie gay adoptions of orphaned children.
And I for one absolutely agree that a loving, stable, well to do couple should never be allowed to adopt a homeless child! After all, that child might catch “the gay” and all the sudden, once these children grew up there would be a whole army of gay activists having orgies on the White House lawn and forcefully turning good and honest heterosexual people into more of those vile gay monsters! Why homosexuality is akin to some sort of vampirism.
Honestly I don’t believe for a second that most of our politicians from the right-wing actually give a rat’s ass about what homosexuals do, whether they get married or not, whether there and the army or not, to the right wing politicians it simply doesn’t matter the fact is that homosexuals are the bogeyman that the republicans use to frighten the dark peasantry of the bible belt.
Let’s ask ourselves the following question, why is the bible belt so afraid of gays and gay marriage?
Are they afraid that homosexuality is a disease that can be transmitted?
Are they afraid that gay marriage somehow cheapens their own marriage?
Are they afraid of homosexuals because of deep seated feelings and stray thoughts of the gay variety?
To answer the first question, I’m sure that there are some red necks out there that do believe that homosexuality can be transmitted click the common cold and that condoning it will lead to everybody being gay. However, I am fairly sure that most people in the bible belt are smart enough to understand that you cannot catch homosexualitis.
Transfer the second question, yes I do believe that a majority of conservative leaning people think that gay marriage somehow cheapens their own marriage.
This line of thinking just confuses to shit out of me! It goes without saying that 99.9% of the churches in the United States will not Mary a homosexual couple.
In the eyes of most Christians, marriage is a privilege that is granted and governed by god and for it to be a true marriage, it must be performed by a man of faith.
In other words, gays who want to marry have to go to the courthouse and be married by the gov’t and this form of marriage is in no way sanctioned by god thus, in the eyes of Christians this form of marriage is void and false.
So if a courthouse marriage is not a marriage at all in the eyes of the church than how exactly does it cheapen the vows that a heterosexual couple expressed before god himself?
Now things get interesting the studies of Dr Alfred Kinsey and his associates are most frequently cited on this question.
Their data suggests that, in fact, few people are predominately heterosexual or homosexual. Most people fall somewhere along the continuum between these two ends of the scale, and therefore have the capacity to experience both affection and sexual feelings for members of both sexes.
As I said before, it is entirely plausible that homosexuals make the bible thumpers feel uncomfortable because even told they are heterosexual a stray gay thought mate enter their consciousness which forces them to look at themselves as they truly are.
Should gays be allowed to marry? Absolutely
Should gays be allowed in the military? Absolutely!
Should gays have all the rights that are extended to straight people? Absolutely!
I really don’t see what all the fuss is about, homosexual or not we’re talking about adults. We’re talking about consenting adults. We are talking about consenting adults who have found that rarest of treasures.
They found love.
And nothing about homosexuals makes this heterosexual uncomfortable or nervous in any way or cause me to worry about my own sexuality, why should it. But even if it did, so what?
Edit: Given everything that is going on I thought I’d bring up this post again as it’s very newsworthy ATM.
